Madrid has several beautiful parks. The iconic Parque del Buen Retiro, literally 'Park of the Pleasant Retreat', is the most famous. Formerly a royal garden, it has been open to the public since the 1860s, and is a favourite walking, jogging, and picnicking destination for Madrileños during the day and on weekends. There are 12 kiosks where you can have a drink, a lovely lake if you want to go for a canoe paddle, and remarkable fountains to cool off next to. In the French flowerbed, it also collects the famous bald cypress that Cortes brought back from Mexico.
If you have a fondness for the occult, you will not want to miss Ricardo Bellver's Fountain of the Fallen Angel, the world's only public monument depicting Satan. Relax in the Garden of Perennials, the Andalusian gardens of Cecilio Rodriguez, those of architect Herrero Palacios, or in the fabulous rose garden. Note the romantic Crystal Palace, created to accommodate specimens of exotic plants during the 1887 Exhibition of the Philippine Islands.
