Tacos 1986, bringing Tijuana to Los Angeles

The whole of Los Angeles has fallen for the delicious tacos at Tacos 1986, in the city centre.

It is the kind of success story that foodies love. The phenomenon that is Tacos 1986 began with a simple food truck, like so many others you find in the streets around Hollywood. Through his tacos, the chef of this travelling kitchen, Jorge “El Joy” Alvarez-Tostado, wanted to share the flavours of his childhood in Tijuana, Mexico, combined with the inspirations he found in Los Angeles. Within a few short months, he had made a name for himself on the gastronomic scene. Now, all of Los Angeles frequents his bricks and mortar, taqueria-style restaurant in the centre of town, from neighbourhood kids to top celebrities.

The Tacos 1986 menu is based on four recipes from Joy's childhood. Why not try the sweet flavours of Abodaba, pork shoulder marinated and cooked on a vertical rotisserie, then carefully carved and placed in a corn tortilla shell. Spicy sauce, guacamole, onions, and fresh coriander provide the finishing touch. If you are lucky, you might also get the chance to enjoy one of these tacos from the original food truck, which still makes its way through the city streets, bringing the flavours of Tijuana to Los Angeles.
