Sea, sun and fun: the beaches of Lake Michigan

Nicknamed “The Third Coast” of the United States, Lake Michigan's long shoreline is broken into 33 dream beaches.

Soft white sand and 27° C water: Chicago beaches are a summertime must. Equipped with umbrellas and chairs, they are generally named after the streets perpendicular to the shore.

The largest city park, Lincoln Park, has the most famous beaches, including Montrose Beach, the city's longest, North Avenue Beach, the oldest and also one of the most popular, and Oak Street Beach, which has the largest authorised swimming area.

Families throng to Thorndale Beach and Humboldt Park Beach, where the shallow waters make for perfect wading pools. The best strategy is to rent a small motorboat and go for an off-coast swim, far away from the crowds.
