On the weekend, Pau's bar Les Sardines is aptly named, as crowds gather in front of the establishment's green facade and wine enthusiasts are "packed like sardines" around the counter. It has to be said that ever since it opened, the place has become a key player of the nighttime scene, in what is the third largest city of the Aquitaine region. Decorated with bargain-hunted furniture, like school tables and chairs on ground floor, the design is pleasantly retro upstairs, with vintage posters on the walls and a chic 70s-like salon: expect velvet sofas and large egg-shaped armchairs. Book a table to really appreciate the wine selection, from organic chianti to Jurançon, best enjoyed with a few typical tapas, razor shell clams a la plancha, fried smelt, patatas bravas, vegetable tempura, as well as excellent prime ribs from the Basque region, the house special, generously portioned on a board with potatoes. Get ready to party with concerts and DJ sets, taking place on a weekly basis. At Sardines, no grim faces allowed!
