Le Rétro is still the place to be

This legendary spot on the harbour remains the best place in town for a drink or a coffee while watching the world go by.

Le Rétro: no visit to Papeete is complete without at least a few hours whiled away under its red awnings and neon lights. Centrally located on the harbour of Papeete, the establishment draws locals and travellers from morning through lunch, happy hour and on into the evening. Some like to compare it to Saint-Tropez's Café Sénéguier… only with a more exotic setting. This tavern is undoubtedly the island's go-to café with its French brasserie look. It retained a special place among locals, as many remember French American singer Joe Dassin spent his last moments there in 1980. The artists sang and loved Polynesia, and the inhabitants loved him back. A commemorative plaque has even been fitted at the entrance of Le Rétro.

Sooner or later, all visitors to Tahiti pass through its doors. Will it soon be your turn?
