Five rooftops for a different view of Paris

Summer in Paris is lived on its rooftops. By going up in the world, you will discover hidden terraces, just perfect for time-out with a leafy, gourmet or party feel.

The surprising leafy setting of the Jardin Suspendu

From the end of June, come and enjoy the largest rooftop garden in Paris. The Jardin Suspendu, on the eighth floor of an unused car park at Porte de Versailles, was so successful in 2018 that the pop-up experience is back for a promising new season from June. Perched at a height of 27 metres, this vast 3,500-m2 space envelops you in a green bubble where olive trees, lemon trees, cactus and Japanese maples, to name a few, sit side by side. This year, the designers have doubled their efforts to offer visitors an even lusher location than before.

Deep in thought, settle down on a bench and let yourself be carried away by the DJ sets. Feel the urge to move? Join a yoga class or the exercise-and-drink session. After an hour's exertion, you really deserve your favourite tipple. If you are a bit hungry, peruse the food stands and choose as the mood takes you. As night falls, make yourself comfortable on one of the colourful, oversized cushions. An outdoor film screening is about to start any minute.

A different perspective from Le Balcon

In the east of Paris stands the Paris Philharmonic, an aluminium-clad architectural marvel that looks like a pile of wobbling plates. It is also home to a contemporary hideaway, sheltered from the hustle and bustle of the city. Take refuge on the terrace of Le Balcon, a restaurant perched on the sixth floor. This stylish belvedere designed by Jean Nouvel offers unobstructed views over the Parc de la Villette with its Géode dome and the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie. Recharge your batteries looking out at this most extraordinary of Parisian panoramas.

Then, go and cast your aesthetic eye over the warm and welcoming interior designed by architect Frédéric Druot. In the glass-fronted kitchens, you can see the staff dashing about at their work – all part of a well-orchestrated stage set. Ask for wine recommendations at the huge circular bar in the middle of the room. At Le Balcon, wines from the various regions of France take pride of place. You plump for a glass of red Menetou-Salon, the perfect accompaniment for your beef carpaccio maki with a kiwi, Granny Smith and passion fruit salsa and guacamole garnish. Then, head back to the terrace to savour some more of this gourmet experience.

Cosy times at the Hôtel National des Arts et Métiers

Nestled on a comfortable bench, you gaze out at one of the most stunning urban landscapes in the capital. Below you, the Pompidou Centre with its ultra-modern architecture rises imposingly amidst its Haussmann-designed neighbours. In the distance, you can see the Place de la République, Louvre museum and the Eiffel Tower. You are one of the privileged 30 or so guests who have booked to spend an evening on the intimate rooftop of the Hôtel National des Arts et Métiers.

Latest haunt of hip Parisians, this hot spot is hidden away in the trendy area of Sainte-Avoye, where the Montorgueil district meets the Haut Marais. Escape to its timeless terrace, an oasis of elegance with light-wood decking, white cushions and riotous plants. As an aperitif before dinner, enjoy a selection of cicchetti, small snacks typical of Venice, all washed down with a most befitting Bellini. Surrender to this special, intoxicating moment with its dreamy panoramic backdrop.

An air of Italy at Auteuil Brasserie

In the heart of the uber-chic 16th arrondissement, there has been a change of scenery for the elegant Auteuil Brasserie which has now taken over the whole of a former railway station. Reserving a few days in advance, you will be rewarded with a wonderful evening on its hallowed terrace, squirrelled away on the roof. A large candle-lit staircase leads you up to this divine rooftop, far from any prying eyes.

A country air floats above this leafy haven, overflowing with plants and flowers. This place makes you feel like you are on holiday. Settle down in the corner of a bench plumped up with brocade cushions. Enjoy a bit of the dolce vita as only the Italians know how. On fine days, sit back and enjoy a glass of Spritz, in moderation, of course. In summer, there is a canopy to protect you from the sun. It goes without saying that the menu, which includes gourmet pizzas and other specialities from the bel paese, will bring out the gourmet in you. So, give in to temptation and order the buffalo mozzarella ball on a bed of homemade, candied cherry tomatoes. The rooftops of Paris have so many surprises in store for you.
