Located close to the Avenida da Boavista, one of Porto's main roads, the Serralves Foundation was built amidst a lovely 18-hectare park. Start the circuit by visiting the famous Modern Art Museum, opened in 1999 and designed by Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza. The museum was first thought out as part of an ensemble to make Porto a European capital of culture, which so happened in 2001. Nowadays, it shelters permanent collections of major works of art, of all styles and movements from the past decades. Moviegoers will enjoy a detour by the House of Cinema, a structure entirely dedicated to the work of Portuguese filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira.
Prolong the visit and stroll around the park of the foundation, showcasing lush gardens and miniature ponds. Enjoy those moments of peace and quiet before heading to the Casa de Serralves, headquarters of the foundation. Built in an Art Deco style, it offers plenty of avant-garde temporary exhibitions.
